A colheita esperada de algod\u00e3o de 24 milh\u00f5es de fardos em 2006\/07 na \u00cdndia seria a segunda melhor j\u00e1 registrada, apenas um pouco abaixo da melhor colheita da \u00cdndia de 24,3 milh\u00f5es de fardos definida em 2004\/05, e a quarta safra consecutiva de algod\u00e3o no pa\u00eds. Aumentos esperados na \u00e1rea plantada s\u00e3o a principal raz\u00e3o para o forte desempenho, de acordo com o Servi\u00e7o de Agricultura Estrangeira do Departamento de Agricultura dos EUA <\/a>(USDA-FAS).<\/p>\n

O plantio de algod\u00e3o deve aumentar para 9,0 milh\u00f5es de hectares (Ha) com os fortes pre\u00e7os do algod\u00e3o e bons rendimentos durante a temporada atual. A produ\u00e7\u00e3o de algod\u00e3o extra longo (ELS) deve se recuperar para 200.000 fardos de 170 quilos com maiores plantios de DCH 32 (a variedade local ELS), devido aos pre\u00e7os recordes na temporada atual.<\/p>\n

Bacilo thuringiensis<\/i>O plantio de algod\u00e3o (Bt) em 2006\/07 deve saltar quase tr\u00eas vezes para 4,2 milh\u00f5es de hectares, respondendo por quase metade da \u00e1rea esperada de algod\u00e3o. Recentemente, o governo da \u00cdndia aprovou 20 novas variedades de Bt para cultivo comercial. As novas aprova\u00e7\u00f5es incluem duas variedades que incluem um gene Bt desenvolvido por uma universidade local e duas variedades com um gene Bt origin\u00e1rio da China.
