EU Approves GM Corn, Potato

BRUSSELS, Belgium — In its first approval of a genetically modified (GM) food crop in 12 years, the EU Commission has okayed growing Amflora, Germany-based BASF SE‘s GM potato, as well as the use of three varieties of GM corn in food and feed production, reports the Associated Press. Amflora is a starch potato modified specifically to produce amylopectin for industrial use, such as in the paper industry. The three GM corn products come from St. Louis, Missouri, US-based Monsanto Co.; although they have been approved for food and feed production, the corn has not received approval for cultivation in the EU. While some countries, such as Italy, still refuse to grow the GM potato, Amflora will be planted on a small scale in eastern Germany.

Amflora and the three Monsanto corn varieties had previously been approved by the European Food Safety Authority.
