German Canola Expands, Production Doesn’t

Despite an increase in planted area of 5.8% to 1.4 million hectares (Ha), canola production in Germany is likely to be down in 2006 after 2005’s above-average yields. The German Federal Office of Statistics reports the final 2005 canola production at 5.05 million metric tons (MT).

While admittedly a premature forecast due to the large impact on yield attributed to the amount of winter-kill and the weather during the flowering period, the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS) cautiously predicts production of 4.9 million MT, assuming average yields of 3.5 MT per Ha.
