Marrone Bio Innovations Receives Bioherbicide Patent
1 July 2013 The United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a patent for Marrone Bio Innovations, Inc.’s sarmentine, the active ingredient in the company’s new bioherbicide, MBI-011. Sarmentine is one of three herbicides that the U.S.-based company has under development for commercialization.
The herbicidal activity of sarmentine was discovered by two MBI chemists, making it the first patent received from its own discovery.
The MBI-011 technical grade active ingredient and end product formulations were submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in December 2012 for registration as an herbicide. The pending registration is for control of annual and perennial grass and broadleaf weeds in the agricultural, turf and ornamental as well as consumer home and garden markets.
