Syngenta Seeks Deregulation Of GM Corn For Ethanol

The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which has regulated genetically modified (GM) organisms since 1986 and overseen the deregulation of more than 70 products, is seeking public comment on a petition by Syngenta to deregulate a corn variety genetically engineered to facilitate ethanol production. Following the comment period, APHIS determine nonregulated status if it concludes that there is no plant pest risk.

If APHIS grants the Syngenta Seeds petition for deregulation, the GM corn would no longer be regulated articles. The product could then be freely moved and planted without the requirement of permits or other regulatory oversight by APHIS. APHIS has regulated the variety through its notification and permitting process since 2002.
