Huckabay says that farmers in the US &#8212; the world&rsquo;s largest grower and exporter of corn, soybean and wheat &#8212; will plant more of both leading crops this year, using land usually planted for wheat. Heavy rains last year kept many wheat fields fallow, with winter wheat production falling 14% to the smallest area &#8212; 2.5 million hectares (ha) &#8212; since 1913, said the US Department of Agriculture (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usda.gov\">USDA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the conversion of wheat fields to corn and soybeans in May and June this year, a government conservation program will add another 1.13 million ha will to corn and soy crops. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s more than 9 million acres [3.6 million ha] that can go into spring crops this year,&rdquo; Huckabay said. &ldquo;There is no longer a food-shortage crisis. The USDA reports indicate at least a new chapter, and probably a new book will be written&rdquo; regarding two years of surpluses.<br \/> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>USDA reported that US soybean production increased 13% to 3.361 billion bushels last year while corn production grew 8.8%. A record 13.151 billion bushels of corn were harvested by US growers this season, up from 12.092 billion the prior year, said USDA. Farms and warehouses held 10.934 billion bushels on Dec. 1, the most ever for that date. Unsold US supplies before next year&rsquo;s harvest will total 1.764 billion bushels, up from 1.673 billion last year, USDA said. US inventories may rise to 2 billion bushels because of a slowdown in export demand and animal feed consumption, said Dan Basse, President of Chicago-based information, statistical research and advisory firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agresource.com\/\">AgResource Co<\/a>. &ldquo;A 2-billion-bushel carryover does not engender a bull market,&rdquo; Basse said. &ldquo;There has been a significant change in the supply landscape.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lower Prices, Fewer Ag Inputs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While increased acreage will require more crop inputs, Basse noted that companies that make farm machinery, seeds, chemicals and fertilizer fell yesterday on speculation that farmers will have less money to buy their products. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vaneck.com\/MOO\">Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF<\/a>, which includes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mosaicco.com\">Mosaic Co<\/a>., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.monsanto.com\">Deere &amp; Co., Monsanto Co.<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.syngenta.com\">Syngenta AG<\/a>, yesterday fell 2.3% in New York, the biggest drop since Dec. 17, according to Business Week.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The profitability in the farm sector is going to fall,&rdquo; Basse said, speculating that lower farm incomes will result in lower sales for suppliers. The USDA&rsquo;s forecast sent corn prices in Chicago down by the most since June, and soybeans reached the lowest level since November. Corn futures for December delivery may drop 28% to US $3 a bushel by September, Huckabay said, adding that soybeans for November delivery may decline 22% to as low as $7.50.<\/p>\n<p><strong>World Production<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>USDA predicts world production will total 253.4 million metric tons in the year ending Sept. 30, up 20% from the previous year.
