This program to recognize and promote environmental stewardship in farm supply retailers has seen involvement from more than 100 businesses in 11 countries over the last two years. 2008’s WOR Country Champions represent all four corners of the world.<\/p>\n

Asia Pacific<\/p>\n

Andall Hasa Prima, PT — Indonesia<\/strong>
Reporting and reconfirming to its vendors has helped Andall Hasa Prima, PT of Bandar Lampung to discourage the trade of low quality and illegal products. The company also follows its products to the end-user to note problems and ensure proper use, as well as offering soil sampling services to its customers.<\/p>\n

Properly educating producers to use personal protective equipment while spraying is important to Andall Hasa Prima, which makes every effort to sell pesticides with minimum risk. The company also provides employee training on materials handling, safety and performance standards, and emergency preparedness and response. With emergency equipment on hand and a detailed written emergency response plan, the company “supports safety and environmental conservation throughout the plant production practice,” says If. Achmad Lutfi, agriculture engineer.<\/p>\n

Chawalitkitkaset Co. — Thailand
<\/strong>Owner and managing director of Chawalitkitkaset Co., Ltd. in Muang, Thailand, Chawalit Sudhamwong is also the current vice president of the Chiangrai Thai Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture section. He has set up training for growers on good agricultural practices and user and community pesticide product safety, as well as advising Thailand Tobacco on joining the laminate bottle recycling program.<\/p>\n

The company is situated far from populous communities and the building constructed to minimize water contamination risk, with the warehouse separate from the showroom and main office and separate fertilizer and pesticide warehouses. Not only does Chawalitkitkaset Co. offer quality products and safety training, but also provides free goggles and gloves with each customer purchase.<\/p>\n

Samson Agricultural Supply — Philippines<\/strong>
With 24-hour security guards operating within the facility — which is itself centered on a 5-hectare lot surrounded by company-owned rice paddies — Samson Agricultural Supply is serious about safety. “Regular meetings are conducted to discuss emergency response and product stewardship,” says General Manager Samson Hilomen. The Urdaneta-based company is licensed with the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority to distribute only registered crop protection products, and requires supplier companies to conduct product training to growers on proper use, dose rate, and correct crop application.<\/p>\n

“Carrying crop protection products and other chemicals requires a special consideration to the environment due to the hazards it may cause if used inappropriately,” Hilomen explains. “Investing in the protection of the environment will mean sustainable agriculture and a safer world.”<\/p>\n

Nguyen Thanh Long Pesticide Dealer — Vietnam
<\/strong>Nguyen Thanh Long, owner and operator of the Nguyen Thanh Long Pesticide Dealer in Chau Thanh District, has outfitted his facility with camera monitoring systems and alarms as well as limiting access to a controlled entry point.<\/p>\n

Emergency equipment is readily available, with fire extinguishers and a water supply on hand, and the company is in regular contact with the local emergency response agency. Nguyen Thanh Long is a hands-on operator, meeting face-to-face with growers in the local rice and vegetable growing area, offering consulting and training activities. The dealership encourages farmers to use products with short pre-harvest intervals (PHI) for vegetable and fruit crops and low toxicity to fish and aquatic organisms in rice fields.<\/p>\n

Shanghai AMPC — China
<\/strong>According to Purchasing Manager Xu Lin, Shanghia AMPC has made a “Significant effort that educates farmers to avoid improper use of pesticides,” as well as “aggressively promote highly effective and short residue pesticides to support vegetable production. As a result, vegetable exports from local vegetable bases experienced no crop residue concern.” The Shanghai-based company is focused on high quality and safe and effective handling procedures, making sure that MSDS sheets are available for each product the facility receives and stores. “Shanghai AMPC insists on only selling good quality products to ensure no unexpected contamination or process impurites so that applicators’ and consumers’ safety is protected,” says Xu Lin. “Farmers are free from the crop damage caused by counterfeit or poor quality products.”<\/p>\n

Central Asia<\/p>\n

Ifoda Company — Uzbekistan
<\/strong>The Namangan-based Ifoda Company is the leader with more than 30% of the Uzbek pesticides market, says Olim Isaev, company president. It uses this position to encourage suppliers to conduct their businesses in environmentally sound ways, says Isaev, stating: “We believe that the long-term success of businesses lies in doing business without hurting the environment.”<\/p>\n

The company demonstrates that belief in its daily business, with a detailed facility map, emergency response plan, and emergency safety equipment at the ready, with its own employees and local emergency agencies making sure on a regular basis that “the facility is in compliance with applicable environment, worker safety, and other regulations laid by authorities,” explains Isaev. The company also encourages recycling and educates organizations on distinguishing counterfeit products from genuine ones.<\/p>\n

Latin America<\/p>\n

Agroganadero Ltda — Colombia
<\/strong>“We are always motivated to find environmental programs to apply in our business and region,” says German Escudero, crop engineer for Agroganadero Ltda. “Respect for the environment is the key to life.” The company demonstrates this through meetings with clients in which they highlight the importance of environmental conservation and assistence in helping its customers maintain product application records. It is in constant communication with clients about illegal and low quality chemicals, and consults with the National Industrial Association (ANDI) about controlling such products.<\/p>\n

Employee safety is also a top priority for this Ipiales-based company, which provides emergency equipment and training on safe handling procedures.<\/p>\n

Agroquimica de Jacona SA de DV — Mexico<\/strong>
This Jacona-based company employs a true 21st century security system, with feed from security cameras viewable through the internet. Local law enforcement is familiar with Agroquimica’s on-site security measures, and the fire and civil protection departments are informed about the warehouse. Not only are measures taken to secure product, but the company also promotes safe and educated usage of its branded products.<\/p>\n

“We’re focused on sustainability,” says the company’s Gildardo Arroyo Valdes. “We have personnel qualified in agrochemical recommendations [and] we’re training the community to reduce the pesticide impact on the environment.”<\/p>\n

Cooperativa Agropecuaria Castrolanda — Brazil<\/strong>
Cooperative Agropecuaria Castrolanda of Castro, Brazil, ascertains that both its employees and business partners are constantly trained, use pallets, and receive all equipment from Environmental Protection Industries (EPI). Written security procedures, occupational environment evaluations, and risk maps all contribute to the company’s environmental awareness.<\/p>\n

Cooperativa Agropecuaria has invested in applied research for 30 years, and has spread this technology to its associates, the community, and the region through field days, publications, and meetings. “We are working for the growth and sustainable development of our company and also the construction of a better world for the next generations,” says the cooperative’s Mario Tadeu Balvedi.<\/p>\n

Middle East<\/p>\n

Agrimatco for Agriculture — Egypt<\/strong>
Giza-based Agrimatco for Agriculture takes an extra step when it obtains samples of illegal products — and then sends them to the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Trade for tracking. It also places advertisements warning growers and traders against the use of such products, publishes literature distinguishing the difference between the original product and illegal ones, and conducts seminars explaining how illegal products can harm crops.<\/p>\n

“In the war against illegal products, marketing and communications are very important to convey our message to farmers and retailers through seminars and field days,” reports Hazem Mohamed Sly Ghobashy, head of pesticides department. “Our company is working with reliable products and we have an excellent reputation and image with our farmers. It entails [us] to invest more in order to teach and protect our growers, building a strong base of reliable growers and retailers.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
