{"id":66475,"date":"2020-10-05T13:16:24","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T17:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.agribusinessglobal.com\/?p=66475"},"modified":"2020-10-06T09:48:41","modified_gmt":"2020-10-06T13:48:41","slug":"u-s-ag-retail-distribution-feels-pressure-from-new-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.agribusinessglobal.com\/zh\/markets\/u-s-ag-retail-distribution-feels-pressure-from-new-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"\u7f8e\u56fd\uff1a\u519c\u4e1a\u96f6\u552e\u5206\u9500\u9762\u4e34\u65b0\u95ee\u9898\u7684\u538b\u529b"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a famous Chinese curse that\u2019s rather straightforward when it comes the events of the day: \u201cMay you live in interesting times.\u201d In other words, this statement hopes listeners will be facing myriad new challenges and opportunities whenever in time they happen to be vs. being stuck in some kind of unchanging, stagnant daily\/yearly routine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croplife.com\/management\/ag-retail-distribution-feels-pressure-from-new-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes Eric Sfiligoj at <em>CropLife<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s doubtful, however, that the ancient Chinese philosophers that gave birth to this curse could have imagined how it might apply to the current year the world is living through in 2020. In fact, referring to 2020 as \u201cinteresting\u201d in the context of the many societal and business changes that have occurred seems like a gross understatement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I speak for many when I say the world has never seen a year like 2020 in terms of disruption,\u201d says John Oster, Sales Specialist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morralcompanies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Morral Companies<\/a>, Morral, OH. \u201cAfter everything the agricultural industry went through during 2019 \u2013 with extreme weather and trade issues, for instance \u2013 I wouldn\u2019t have thought 2020 could be more disruptive. But here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And in truth, the ag retail distribution channel was already undergoing some extreme challenges when it came to marketplace dynamics. This is why <em>CropLife\u00ae<\/em> magazine first started covering this area as the primary focus of our October issues a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are definitely in a period of change in the market,\u201d said Dave Coppess, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croplife.com\/top100\/company\/heartland-co-op\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heartland Co-op,<\/a> West Des Moines, IA, back in the October 2017 edition of <em>CropLife<\/em> (our first look at this important topic). \u201cThere are new business models beginning to pop up, and they are threatening to destroy or at least radically alter the old ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few years later in 2019, Steve Rao, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmmarketid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Farm Market iD<\/a>, echoed a similar thought to Coppess. \u201cThe retailer part of agriculture will probably change dramatically in the next few years,\u201d said Rao. \u201cFor the most part, this part of the market has a business model that hasn\u2019t changed for many, many decades. But it will probably need to [do so] to survive going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>And the Survey Says . . .<\/h2>\n<p>As we\u2019ve done during the past four years now, <em>CropLife<\/em> magazine is once again taking an in-depth look at the State of Retail Distribution. We detail how the marketplace is addressing such challenges as e-commerce and some examples of distribution changes that have occurred outside the U.S. in other countries around the globe that might foreshadow similar shifts in the domestic market as well.
