This discovery could lead to higher crop yields and plants with improved disease resistance and tolerance to severe weather.<\/p>\n<p>ARS scientists used tropical corn varities from Mexico and Thailand in the study, which was published in the March 2010 issue of the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genetics.org\">Genetics<\/a>. The two photoperiod-sensitive varieties &#8212; one from each country &#8212; were interbred with two photoperiod-insensitive US corn lines. Hundreds of progeny lines were created; some were grown in North Carolina, which has long day-length summers and some were grown in Florida, which has short day-length winters. Those lines with strong photoperiod response flowered much later in North Carolina, compared to Florida. The researchers have planned future studies to pinpoint specific genes involved in the photoperiod response.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Photoperiod response is the major barrier to using tropical maize [corn] for the improvement of temperate maize varieties,&#8221; researcher James B.
