Ghana To Re-Focus Ag Strategy
Ghana’s Ministry of Food ad Agriculture (MOFA) will re-focus its strategies to address technological and information gaps of small-scale farming systems, reports Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, by manufacturing agricultural tools and sharing information on the use of new agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers. A forum at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, attended by growers of onion, tomato, rice, and watermelon from across the region, was organized by Food Security Policy and Advocacy Network (FoodSPAN) and facilitated by Action Aid Ghana.
A communiqué issued by the growers said research conducted by MOFA should be directed at innovative technologies for small scale agricultural production systems and should be more participatory, and that the work of the extension service provider should not end at supporting farmers to produce but with the proper handling and marketing of their produce. The communiqué also called on the government to protect small-scale farmers by minimizing the importation of foods which lower the market value of products.
