South America: Weed Resistance Up
Scientists say that weed resistance to glyphosate is growing in South America, according to a Southeast Farm Press article.
Several leading weed scientists and other researchers commented on the problems of resistance in a summit sponsored by Syngenta. Among them was Ribas Vidal, professor of weed science at the University of Rio Grande du Sol, Brazil, who said that four provinces in the northern part of Argentina had documented cases of glyphosate-resistant johnsongrass in 2006. He added that researchers in Brazil have found suspect cases of resistance in johnsongrass in soybean fields there, promoted by heavy use of Roundup Ready (RR) soybeans and glyphosate.
A major problem in Brazil which specialists say is likely to migrate north to US fields is wild poinsettia, a weed that has shown resistance to multiple herbicides, including glyphosate, and is a problem on over 40 million acres in Brazil.
