BASF Closing, Reducing Production At 180 Plants

Germany-based BASF says it is “temporarily shutting down 80 plants worldwide and reducing production at a further 100” due to a “massive decline in demand in key industries,” reports Chemical Week. About 20% to 25% of the company’s overall capacity, and an estimated 20,000 people will be affected by the cuts.

BASF has stated that its 2008 operating earnings will come in below 2007 numbers.
