‘Elite’ Jatropha Yields More Oil

ENCINITAS, California, US — SG Biofuels has revealed its newly launched JMax 100 — a proprietary variety of the jatropha curcas plant that the company calls the world’s first “elite” jatropha variety, reports the Los Angeles Times. Jatropha oil can be refined to produce diesel fuel and jet fuel, as well as specialty chemicals.

The company says that JMax 100 — said to produce 100% more oil than existing varieties — will be more than 300% more profitable than current commercial varieties. JMax 100 will be able to produce more than 800 gallons per acre at US$1.39 per gallon, SG says, increasing Jatropha’s profitability
to more than $1,000 per hectare.

The cultivar, which SG says is optimal for harvesting in Guatemala, was created after more than three years of research.
