Explosion At Bayer CropScience Kills One

At approximately 10:25 pm on August 28, an explosion occurred at the Unit of the Bayer CropScience Plant in Institute, West Virginia, US. The cause is as yet unknown, but a raging fire was visible for miles, reports the local TV station, WBOY.

The damaged section of the plant produces Larvin, an insecticide used on multiple crops including corn, cotton, and vegetables. The plant’s emergency sensors did not indicate that any substantial toxic chemicals had been released outside of the plant.

One person was injured in the explosion, and was transferred to a burn center. Another individual was unaccounted for until around 5 a.m. today, when he was confirmed dead by authorities. The search for the Bayer worker could only begin after the flames were under control.
