New Zealand’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved an application for a new insecticide that contains bifenthrin and imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid.
New Zealand-based Ensystex NZ Ltd applied to import the water-based insecticide Bithor, which is intended for use to control ants.
EPA’s expert Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Committee approved the application, but has imposed rules to protect people, animals and the environment.
The rules are detailed in the Committee’s decision, which can be accessed on EPA’s website.
The rules include provisions to make sure the product does not enter waterways, and provide for the protection of insects such as bees when Bithor is used.
