Syngenta Acquires SPS Argentina SA
In a move that will help increase its presence in Argentina’s soybean market – the world’s third largest, with 21% of global soybean production – Switzerland-based Syngenta announced that it has agreed to acquire seed company SPS Argentina SA (SPS). SPS specializes in the development, production, and marketing of soybean, corn and sunflower – the latter two commodities in which Syngenta already holds strong positions in Argentina, developing, producing, and marketing premium quality seeds under the NK, Rogers, and S&G brands.
SPS, established in 1972, is based in Buenos Aires Province, where it also runs an advanced research program. SPS has recorded sales of $15 million in the fiscal year to March 2008.
The transaction is subject to approval by the Argentine antitrust authorities. Financial details have not been disclosed.
