US To Increase Biofuels Goals?
Bush is could be calling for as much as double the current US goals for the amount of ethanol that refiners mix with gasoline. While the exact details of the proposal are not yet known, a new target of around 15 billion gallons of ethanol would work out to more than 10% of the country’s current gasoline consumption, and is far beyond the current production capacity of about 5.4 billion gallons.
At least half of the new ethanol would come from corn, though several other alternatives could be making more headway as bioenergy sources in the US.
