Free Trade for the EU and India

India and the EU are planning to sign a free trade deal within a year, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced after a one-day EU-India summit in New Delhi.

The talks have been stalled by the EU’s desire to include policies about intellectual property rights, global warming and child-labor laws.

The EU and India set an ambitious target of more than doubling their bilateral trade to 200 billion dollars in the next four years if a free-trade deal is concluded.

India has most recently signed free trade deals with ASEAN countries and South Korea, and the US is currently negotiating with India for a trade and investment treaty.
