Indian Agriculture Workers Avert Strike
About 1,00,000 workers from the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs) across Maharashtra state went on an indefinite strike Monday, sending a scare through price increases through residents in Mumbai and its suburbs.
Workers of the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), a trade organization that is the lone supplier of commodities to about 15 million residents of the financial capital of India, are demanding better housing and wages.
Prices of green vegetables rose up to 50% Monday due to high festival demand for food. As a result of the one-day strike, farmers were unable to send their produce to market, and union workers refused to unload trucks and rail cars when shipments were sent.
The strike ended Monday evening when APMC workers were assured that housing situations and wages would improve during the next 30 days. APMC is also contesting the direct sourcing of fruits and vegetables by 25 corporations that bypass the APMCs.
