Bosnia and Herzegovina Opens New Sugar Refinery

The Central European Agrana Group and Austrian Studen & CO Holding have built a new sugar refinery in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in the Brcko District. The new sugar refinery “Studen-Agrana d.o.o. Sugar Refinery Brcko” — which won the 2007 most important Greenfield Investment Award — started refining and distributing sugar at the end of June 2008.

The only factory in BiH that refines sugar, this 40 million Euro investment is expected to employ 160 workers and ensure annual production of around 150,000 tons of refined sugar, said factory management.

Currently, BiH imports its entire domestic sugar consumption, which is around 130,000 MT, mostly from Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Austria.
