India Amends Food, Crop Policy

The amendments stipulate that all GM foods (including imported and domestically produced items) must be labeled as such. The labeling should indicate that the food contains GM material and has been subject to genetic modification.

The second draft amendment applies to the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules that were framed under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA), 1954. The amendment would alter the pesticide tolerance limits on several crops, including soybeans, wheat, apples, and grapes. The more notable changes are as follows:

  • Apples / difenoconazole: 0.01 mg/kg (ppm)
  • Grapes / dimethomorph: 0.05 mg/kg (ppm)
  • Soya / quizalofop-ethyl: 0.05 mg/kg (ppm)
