Kazakhstan Wheat Up 500,000 MT
Kazakhstan’s wheat production is expected to increase 500,000 metric tons (MT) in 2006 to reach 11.5 million MT, depending on weather conditions. The area sown is approximately the same as 2005, while the lack of drought and rust contributing to the improved performance, reports the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS).
The country’s government funded spraying on about 1 million hectares (Ha), with spraying on the remaining fields paid by producers.
While under Soviet rule, the area planted to grains reached as high as 25 million Ha, the Ministry of Agriculture believes that total grain area should be kept under 12-15 million Ha, including 10-12 million for wheat and 2-3 million for other grains. This will help the country’s farmers focus on fertile land and avoid marginal growing areas.
The government of Kazakhstan is attempting to assists grain producers to increase yields and improve quality through subsidies on agricultural chemicals and fuel for grain producers.
