Methyl Bromide Wins Reprieve

Methyl bromide is used in California mostly for strawberries, which are a US $386 million-a-year industry. Although the Montreal Protocol – an international treaty designed to ban ozone-layer depleting chemicals – has reduced methyl bromide use by approximately 75% since 1991, it is still relied upon by about 19,000 of the 34,000 strawberry acres grown in California.
