Switzerland Bans GMOs Until 2012
The Swiss Federal Council has voted to extend the country’s moratorium on genetically modified (GM) crops for an additional three years, Dow Jones reports. The ban, imposed in 2005, was originally set to expire in November, 2010. The extension is to complete a national research program into the benefits and risks of GM crops and the safety of GM crops coexisting with conventional and organic crops, and study the results.
According to the Council, Swiss farmers have benefited from being able to market their produce on international markets as GM-free.
