The initial reports from the deadly explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, are pointing to ammonium nitrate (AN) as the cause for the blast, reports U.S.-based Agricultural Retailers Association (ARA).
This is developing news, but most reports indicate this was likely an accident due to negligent storage following a confiscation at the port in 2013. ARA will continue to monitor the news as the situation unfolds.
This tragic incident is a reminder of how critical it is to abide by safety protocols. ARA encourages all of its members to join ResponsibleAg in its continued industry-led work to help ensure compliance with environmental, health, safety and security regulations to keep employees, customers and communities safe.
ARA and The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) published a document on safety and security guidelines specific to the storage and transportation of fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate. In addition, the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) has provided a document as guidance on mitigating risk as well.
