EU Sets Two Ag-Chem Phase-Outs

EU member states are to withdraw approvals for all carbaryl- and trichlorfon-based products by Nov. 21, 2007. Any period allowed for the sale and use of existing stocks should be completed by Nov. 21, 2008 at the latest, said the EC.

Spain was rapporteur member state for both ais, with Bayer CropScience as the notifying company for carbaryl and Cequisa for trichlorfon. Carbaryl was not re-registered because its dossier did not provide acceptable consumer exposure data and there were high risks for insectivorous birds, herbivorous mammals, aquatic organisms, and beneficial arthropods, according to the EC. Trichlorfon was not re-registered because a significant lack of supporting studies prevented the demonstration of its safe use.
