Mexico: Aiming Organic

The government has invested US $32 million in alternative production programs, which it hopes will put it on even footing with the five principal organic crop producers in the world.

Mexico’s organic farming area has grown from 25,000 hectares (Ha) to 300,000 Ha in the past 10 years. It is expanding its organic range to include avocadoes, cocoa, vegetables and garden produce. "Mexico is the world’s major producer and exporter of organic coffee," adds Agriculture Minister Alberto Cardenas Jimenez. "Some 85% of organic production is for exports, earning $300 million a year," he notes.
