From Gene-Guided Discovery to Field Solutions: Newsun Launches Six Functional Biostimulants Powered by GeneNavX™

As agriculture shifts toward more precise, sustainable, and resilient crop management, the global biostimulant industry is also entering a new phase. Growers, distributors, and brand owners are increasingly looking for biological solutions with clearer modes of action, stable field performance, and stronger compatibility with full-cycle crop programs.

Against this backdrop, Chengdu Newsun Crop Science Co., Ltd. has launched six functional biostimulants powered by its proprietary GeneNavX™ Functional Biostimulant Innovation Platform. Covering soil restoration, root activation, nutrient transport, source-sink regulation, abiotic stress management, and plant immune induction, the portfolio is designed to support crop health from soil to harvest.

GeneNavX™ Functional Biostimulant Innovation Platform

Unlike conventional screening models that often rely heavily on visible phenotypes and field experience, GeneNavX™ follows a gene-guided development logic. By using key functional gene expression patterns as a navigation system, the platform helps identify active factors, validate biological responses, guide formulation design, and translate mechanism-based discoveries into field-ready products.

This launch reflects Newsun’s more than 20 years of experience in natural active ingredients and marks an important step in its transition from individual biological products to systematic, technology-driven crop solutions.

From Empirical Screening to Mechanism-Based Biostimulant Development

The use of biostimulant-like materials in agriculture started long before the term “biostimulant” was formally established. Field applications of seaweed extracts, humic acids, amino acids, and other bio-based materials gradually helped the industry recognize the commercial value of non-conventional nutritional inputs in crop growth regulation.

The core value of biostimulants is not to directly provide nutrients, but to regulate plant physiological and metabolic processes and activate the crop’s own growth potential. However, because of the complexity of plant responses and the variability of field environments, biostimulant products have long faced challenges such as inconsistent performance and limited user confidence.

Today, the market is placing higher expectations on this category. Brand owners, distributors, and growers are no longer only asking whether a product works. They are increasingly focused on whether it has a clear functional positioning, a scientifically supported mode of action, reproducible field performance, and the ability to fit into integrated crop management programs.

Dr. Huang Jin, Vice Dean of Newsun Biotechnology Research Institute, said:

“The six products launched this time are not simply an expansion of our product portfolio. They represent a functional synergy system built around the key needs of crops at different growth stages. Through clearer functional positioning, more defined mechanisms, and more stable application performance, we hope to help biostimulants move from empirical use toward more scientific and systematic application.”

Six Functional Directions from Soil to Harvest

The six GeneNavX™-powered biostimulants are designed around key physiological needs across the crop growth cycle.

GeneNavX™-NOTILL focuses on soil health and rhizosphere restoration. It is designed to help improve soil structure, root-zone activity, and nutrient buffering capacity, supporting a more active and resilient soil environment.

GeneNavX™-ROOTUP supports early root establishment by promoting primary root elongation, lateral root development, and root hair growth. It helps crops build stronger early-stage growth potential and improve nutrient and water uptake capacity.

GeneNavX™-FOSTER targets nutrient transport and reproductive growth. By supporting carbon and nitrogen metabolism and nutrient assimilation, it helps improve crop vigor, flower and fruit retention, and reproductive development.

GeneNavX™-PLUMP focuses on source-sink regulation during fruit and tuber enlargement. It is designed to support cell division, cell expansion, nutrient accumulation, yield formation, quality improvement, and marketable output.

GeneNavX™-TOUGH is designed for abiotic stress management. It helps crops maintain growth stability under heat, cold, drought, salinity, and other environmental pressures by supporting stress-response pathways.

GeneNavX™-SHIELD supports plant immune activation. By enhancing crop defense responses and systemic resistance, it helps improve crop resilience against pathogen pressure.

Together, the six products form a coordinated full-cycle crop management portfolio rather than isolated single-function inputs.

Dr. Huang added:

“The six products are not isolated solutions. They are built as a coordinated system around crop development from planting and rooting to vegetative growth, fruit formation, and stress management. We aim to help growers reduce overlapping inputs, improve management efficiency, and enhance overall crop health.”

GeneNavX™: Turning Biological Response into Product Innovation

At the core of the six-product portfolio is Newsun’s GeneNavX™ Functional Biostimulant Innovation Platform.

The platform follows a Gene-to-Product development logic, integrating functional gene-guided screening, natural active ingredient discovery, multi-omics mechanism research, formulation design, and field validation. Through this system, Newsun aims to connect biological response mechanisms with practical crop management needs.

GeneNavX™ Functional Biostimulant Innovation Platform

At the resource level, Newsun has built a natural active substance library covering plant-derived, microbial-derived, animal-derived, mineral-derived, and synthetic biology-based sources. These resources are screened and evaluated based on their ability to regulate key crop functions, including root development, nutrient utilization, photosynthesis, abiotic stress response, and plant immune activation.

At the mechanism level, GeneNavX™ applies transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and physiological phenotyping to understand how active substances influence crop growth and stress responses. This enables Newsun to build functional modules such as growth factors, stress tolerance factors, immune activation factors, and nutrient utilization factors, which can then guide product development and formulation design.

Beyond supporting Newsun’s own product pipeline, GeneNavX™ is also designed to enable differentiated biostimulant solutions for global partners, including brand owners, distributors, and crop solution providers seeking science-backed biological technologies.

From Laboratory Research to Field Application

In the global biostimulant industry, it is not common for a company to launch six clearly positioned, functionally defined, and industrially scalable products at the same time. Such a launch requires integrated capabilities across natural active ingredient research, mechanism analysis, formulation development, field validation, and large-scale manufacturing.

Over more than 20 years, Newsun has built a high-throughput resource library covering thousands of natural active substances. The company has targeted 12 major functional directions and screened and accumulated tens of thousands of functional factors. Supported by multiple core technology platforms, Newsun has developed capabilities in multi-component synergy, multi-functional integration, and stable retention of high biological activity.

Newsun’s products have also been validated through multi-region, multi-crop, and multi-year laboratory and field trials, demonstrating application potential under different climates and planting conditions. For example, root irrigation tests on tomato seedlings demonstrated that GeneNavX™-ROOTUP can effectively improve root morphology.Specifically, it accelerates taproot elongation and boosts the number of lateral roots and root hairs, with the growth rates of root length and root weight reaching 48.47% and 56.04%, respectively.

In addition, Newsun’s national-level green factory provides strong support for large-scale supply. With production capacity at the 10,000-ton level and high-standard quality control systems, the company is able to accelerate the transformation of R&D achievements into global market applications.

Enabling Partners with Science-Backed Biological Solutions

For Newsun, the launch of the six functional biostimulants is not only a product milestone, but also a platform-based step toward global collaboration.

With GeneNavX™, Newsun aims to provide partners with more than finished products. The company can support differentiated solution development through active ingredient resources, mechanism-based product design, customized formulation, field validation, and scalable manufacturing.

For global brand owners and distributors, this means access to a technology-backed biostimulant portfolio that can be adapted to different crops, markets, and agronomic needs. For growers, it provides a more systematic approach to improving crop establishment, stress tolerance, yield formation, quality, and overall crop health.

This platform-based approach reflects Newsun’s broader commitment to advancing biological solutions from concept to field performance, and from individual products to integrated crop management programs.
