China’s Fluorine Industry Grows

The fluorine chemical industry has been one of the fastest developing and most promising chemical industries in China. Government policy will drive China’s fluorine industrial revolution, according to Paul Luo, expert of fluorine research for China Chemical Market (CCM) in a webinar.

The four main sectors for China’s fluorine chemical industry include inorganic fluorides, refrigerant, organic-intermediates and fluor polymers.

“From 2005 to 2010, the application of main fluorine chemical products, such as household refrigerators, air conditioner, automobile pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and dyestuff, developed rapidly,” Luo said. “These applications will keep growing fast in the next few years in China.”

Chinese domestic demand for fluorine chemicals is an important driving factor for China’s fluorine industry. In the 12th Five-Year Plan, China has set up a quota system for fluorite manufacturing and exporting, he said.

Most of China’s production of fluorine chemical concentrates in primary products, and there are a high proportion of these products for export.

“The country’s fluorite resource is rich but over-exploited,” Luo said. “The profit of China’s producers is slim. Competition and blind capacity expansion has led to the low operating rate of many producers.”
