Sustainable Agriculture Is a Cornerstone of BASF’s Strategy in India

BASF’s investments in new active ingredients, research infrastructure, and stewardship are part of its strategy to deal with increased food requirements of a rising population. Agrow’s Sanjiv Rana spoke with BASF Agricultural Solutions South Asia’s business director, Rajendra Velagala.

What has been BASF’s strategy for the Indian market?

Let’s begin by looking at some figures. According to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs estimates, India’s population will reach 1.5 billion by 2030, overtaking China, and will hit 1.64 billion in 2050. At present, India hosts 16% of the world’s population with only 2.45% of the global surface area and 4% of the water resources. The irrigated area might go up but overall cultivated area will remain the same. Global estimates from the UN FAO also talk about a 70% increased food requirement between now and 2050. Sustainable agriculture holds the key to this and is at the core of what we do at BASF. It’s a cornerstone of our strategy in India as well.
