Biotech Maize Succeeds In Philippines

“We have been using (Bt corn) for two years now. We hardly use pesticides and the yield has improved,” said farmer Jerry Due in a Monsanto interview. Due has farmed in the Philippines since 1990. “It has been about a 20% to 30% increase from the previous yield.”

Due added that the GM maize has allowed farmers to move away from burning crop residue at harvest, instead allowing the residue to decompose and fertilize the fields. The Bt varieties have allowed farmers to reduce pesticide applications and earn higher incomes as well.
