China: Cropland Converting To Forests

Led by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the Office of the Leading Group for Western Region Development of the State Council, the Ministry of Finance, the State Forestry Administration, and the State Grain Administration, the "Grain to Green Plan" began in 2006 with the goal of converting 267,000 Ha of farms into forests. The chosen fields consist of seriously desertified land, as well as those with a slope of over 25 degrees or with serious water and soil loss.

The government has stated that farmers affected by the plan will maintain enough land for grain production, and that most of the area converted will be in very small portions in the northwest and southwest part of the country.
