China: Getting Tougher On Pesticides

Five pesticides were banned this year, and China’s Agriculture Ministry began putting together a blacklist of companies still making them. Only three companies are still permitted to manufacture the banned products, but only for "emergency situations to control pests, and under strict government supervision."

The China Daily reports that the central government has ordered a two-month law-enforcement campaign to halt the use and production of the chemicals. Lasting from August to September the campaign targets "a dozen or so" pesticide producers who are still making pesticides such as methylamine and phosphamidon.

A series of food scares and a number of recent incidents with tainted Chinese-made exports have made the government increase its attention to policing the banned pesticides.
