Egyptian Rice Exports Strong

In 2005, rice exports from Egypt reached 1,108,426 metric tons (MT) of rice, nearly 44% higher than the 770,288 MT produced in 2004. Largely due to favorable prices, the strong export business is expected to continue this year, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS).

With the international market’s supply of medium grain rice strained, the price for Egypt’s medium grain rice is reported to be near US $370/MT FOB. The primary destination markets for Egypt’s rice include Libya, Turkey, Syria, Singapore, and Romania, with a large number of Middle Eastern and Eastern European countries following.
