Prosaro Receives EPA Registration

A new fungicide manufactured by Bayer CropScience, Prosaro, has received registration from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and will be available for use during the 2009 growing season.

Prosaro is for use on wheat and barley disease control; according to the company press release, it provides excellent activity on Fusarium head blight (scab) while controlling the broadest range of important foliar diseases, such as leaf rust, stem rust, Septoria leaf and glume blotch, and tan spot in wheat, and net blotch, spot blotch, rusts, and scald in barley.

“Prosaro has broad-spectrum control which allows optimum results for improved profitability and greater risk management,” says Randy Myers, Bayer CropScience Fungicide Portfolio Manager. “It offers the best available scab activity which contributes to increased grain quality and yield. Prosaro is proven to reduce deoxynivalenol (DON) levels, thereby reducing the impact of scab on the marketability of the grain.”

Specific to leaf disease control, Prosaro contains active ingredients that penetrate the leaf and are redistributed throughout the tissues, protecting both upper and lower leaf surfaces. According to Myers, the infection process is stopped when the pathogen comes in contact with the fungicide. “The curative action of Prosaro halts the spread of leaf diseases to healthy plant tissue, and its residual activity protects the leaf from new infections,” he says.
