BASF announced in April that it discovered a new mode of action for Initium fungicide. Researchers found that it prevents fungus cells from spreading by latching on to the stigmatellin subsites in cells and preventing the intake of oxygen.

Initium is a component of Zampro fungicide. BASF stated in a press release that the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (FRAC) has verified Zampro’s status as the only fungicide with this distinction.

“Zampro fungicide provides two modes of action, one of which is a completely unique class of control,” said BASF Product Manager Jennifer Holland in a press release.

BASF states that it is not-cross-resistant with other fungicides and controls downy mildew and blight.

FRAC works under the umbrella of CropLife International to identify, prevent, and mitigate fungicide resistance in crops. It was founded in 1981. Originally, it organized working groups to monitor and study benzimidazoles, dicarboximides, demethylation inhibitors (DMIs) and phenylamides. Later it created working groups for the areas of anilinopyrimidines, Strobilurin Type Action and Resistance (STAR) fungicides and new carboxylic acid amides (CAA fungicides).

Stigmatellin is a type of molecule that attaches to enzymes and decreases their metabolic processes that can be responsible for diseases.
