Bayer Honors Top Scientists

Werner Wenning, chairman of the Bayer Board of Management and Dr. Udo Oels, member of the Board responsible for Innovation, Technology, and Environment, presented the 29 awards in Germany to scientists from all of Bayer’s branches.

From Bayer CropScience’s Germany headquarters, Dr. Jacqueline Applegate, Dr. Stefan Dutzmann, Dr. Gerd Hänßler, Dr. Manfred Jautelat, Dr. Klaus Stenzel, and Dr. Ralf Tiemann received the award for the development of prothioconazole, a new fungicide that displays great efficacy against many diseases in a variety of crops and can be used as a seed treatment. Brought to market in several European countries in 2004 under the brand name Proline, the product has exceeded sales expectations.

From Bayer CropScience Canada, Dr. Hieronim Polewicz also received the award for a new canola hybrid breeding program that resulted in a range of superior Vigor varieties for the US and Canadian markets. Incorporating Bayer’s SeedLink hybridization and LibertyLink herbicide tolerance, the seeds were introduced in 1997 and have helped Bayer become a canola seed leader in North America.
