Bayer Signs Rice R&D Agreement With CNRRI

According to a Bayer CropScience press release, the company has signed two agreements with the China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI) for rice research and development, with collaborations in trait development and breeding. The agreements build on a cooperation framework between Monhiem, Germany-based Bayer CropScience and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), established in 2008. Bayer CropScience is engaged in diaglogue with CAAS affiliated institutes such as CNRRI in rice, cotton, canola, soybean, and safety assessment.

Bayer CropScience currently markets conventional hybrid rice varieties under the Arize brand in major rice producing countries such as India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. “We want to intensify our research and development activities in Asia,” says Friedrich Berschauer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer CropScience. “By introducing high-yielding hybrids, we intend to make a contribution to securing the world’s food supply in the 21st century.”

“CAAS attaches great impoirtance to their collaboration and cooperation with Bayer CropScience in many fields and in different forms,” says Dr. Huqu Zhai, President of CAAS. “Rice is the most important crop in China’s agricultural production. Through signing of the agreement, we are looking forward to promoting and boosting food security in China and the world at large.”
