Bayer Launches Rice Fungicide In Japan

MONHEIM, Germany -– Japan has granted regulatory approval in Japan for Bayer CropScience‘s active ingredient isotiani, the company announced in a press release. The new rice fungicide, which is marketed under the brand name Routine, was launched in Korea in 2010. Japan’s market launch is scheduled for 2011, followed by additional important Asian rice-growing countries.

Isotianil, which originates from the chemical class of isothiazoles and stimulates the natural defense mechanisms of rice plants, was jointly developed with the Japanese company Sumitomo Chemical Co. specifically for use in Japan to fight rice blast. Rice blast is a plant disease caused by the fungal pathogen Pyricularia oryzae and is the world’s most economically important rice disease. Occuring throughout the rice plant’s entire growing period in almost all growing regions, rice blast damages seedlings and infects all parts of the rice plant, compromising yields and quality.
