EPA To Ban Endosulfan

WASHINGTON, DC — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says it is ending use of endosulfan in the United States, according to AP. The pesticide has already been banned in 60 countries, although it is still used in Australia. Endosulfan use has been limited in the US since 2002; production will now be phased out by manufacturer Makhteshim Agan of North America (MANA). MANA is in discussions with EPA to work out the details of a plan which will phase out the use of endosulfan over time while giving growers options for moving toward other pest control practices.

The insecticide, used on cotton and some fruits and vegetables, has been said to cause nerve damage in farm workers through inhalation or skin contact, as well as present a hazard to wildlife. Endosulfan, first registered in the 1950’s, is marketed exclusively by MANA under the brand names Thionex 3EC and Thionex 50W. MANA will announce the final timetable for Thionex to producers and agrochemical retailers in the coming weeks.

Two years ago, several groups of workers and environmental advocates sued the EPA for re-registering endosulfan.

In a press release, Raleigh, North Carolina, US-based MANA stated: “From a scientific standpoint, MANA continues to disagree fundamentally with EPA’s conclusions regarding endosulfan and believes that key uses are still eligible for re-registration,” said Scott Rawlins, MANA director of global governmental and industry relations. “The Agency has made a number of overly conservative and unrealistic assumptions about how endosulfan is used that do not reflect the best available science.

“However, given the fact that the endosulfan market is quite small and the cost of developing and submitting additional data high, we have decided to voluntarily negotiate an agreement with EPA that provides growers with an adequate time frame to find alternatives for the damaging insect pests currently controlled by endosulfan,” Rawlins said.

Endosulfan to pollinator honey bee is what DDT is to Malaria. So vital to save honey bee. Makhteshim was the most unlikely stakeholder to voluntarily offer a phase out of Endosulfan as it was trying to protect its use through many forums. Seems there is more to Endosulfan than environment. It is the politics of economics! There seems to unlikely that new markets will be available for high priced patented innovations, so only way is to phase out older low priced generics! Environment is just a pretext. We all know when its chosing options – trade is picked above environmental causes! Its a trade-off by Makhteshim for certain returns! We all will know, sooner or later! Loss will be of farmers, who will be pushed to buying expensive and more harmful pesticides increasing costs of produce and also damaging pollinators along with harmful insects.

Dear People, I would like to call to your common sense. You are banning a molecule just because its POTENTIONAL endoscrine disruption, its potentional bioaccumulation. How is it possible that such a great agency like EPA US is making their decisions based on study made in 2002, and is not even considering latest review of APVMA from 2005, which as a matter of fact was made due to health concerns of the Australian citizens.

What kind of money or privileges are being given on both sides that neither Makhteshim Agan nor EPA looks at the facts???
Dave is right…trade above all, I wonder only how will you people get the lacking food in next few years once you will kill all bee populations with your “new amazingly safe replacements of Endosulfan” like you did in France and Germany???

I beg you start using your brains and not pockets for thinking.

What can suing EPA mean? American honey bee keepers are already following legal course against USEPA for allowing imidachloprid on crops. USA is losing 80% of its honey bees (which are imported for pollination services). USA is not having any healthy bees to pollinate their crops. Reasons? 1) Commercial mono crop farming 2) New invented Neonicotinoids, nicotin based pesticides 3) Urbanisation are said to be the three main reasons for the bee keepers to lose their honey bees. Only safe product on honey bee was Endosulfan. By USEPA welcoming Makhteshim Agan’s phase out – they have welcomed the demise of Honey Bees in the USA!

The US EPA is NOT banning the popular pesticide Endosulfan but only a response to Makhteshim Agan’s voluntary phase out. It is more to do with the company’s incapabilities of producing data to support further re-registration. Once the company wishes to register endosulfan Makhteshim can re-enter Endosulfan or any other company can support registration proceeding by supplying scientific data. The USEPA report also ‘does not alarm’! It is not at all putting anything against Endosulfan.
Produce new data and register endosulfan!
