Monsanto Considering GM Sugarcane

A report on Wednesday in local Valor Economico newspaper added that Monsanto has already formed a partnership with an unnamed local company to develop genetically modified sugarcane varieties. However, “there is nothing official yet,” according to the Monsanto spokeswoman.

Sugarcane, which is processed into ethanol in Brazil, is a large and growing crop that is becoming increasingly important as Brazil’s biofuel exports grow.
