Social Conscience Drives Wynca

Liu Xia grew up in Hangzhou, which is well know for its natural beauty and preservation, especially the city’s West Lake and other nearby lakes and rivers. That social imperative of preservation in Hangzhou — capital of Zehjiang province just south of Shanghai — has helped guide Liu’s principles and strategy as he helps to guide Zhejiang Wynca Chemical Industry Group as its vice general manager.

Among the company’s initiatives are patents on turning solid and water residues into usable products for other industries. The company holds more than 107 patents for technical innovation, many of them stemming from their reuse, recycling or reprocessing of waste products for use by other industries.

“Our strategy in the next two to three years is to expand glyphosate, and also to make our manufacturing technology available to other Chinese producers to increase the efficiency and environmental impact of other producers as well,” Liu says.

Wynca rode the wave of high glyphosate prices in 2008, when it doubled its revenues to more than $750 million. Its revenues fell more than 50% in 2009, according to a recent public statement. Domestic demand for the company rose last year, but almost three-quarters of its export business faltered.

Wynca has capacity to produce 84,000 tonnes of glyphosate annually, and it is adding new facilities that will bring its capacity to 252,000 tonnes.
