India: Cotton Biocontrol Product Developed

Cotton bollworm is considered the most difficult insect to control in the country because of its developed resistance to many commercially available insecticides, according to Dr. RK Pachauri, Director General of TERI.

TERI scientists began research in this area during the late 1990s before biotech Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton seed helped farmers fight back against the bollworm. Station field trials were conducted at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, with American cotton and chickpeas to evaluate the bio-efficacy. The results showed increases up to 205%.
