Brazil CTC To Test GM Sugarcane

William Burnquist, technology director of CTC, said that CTC’s three varieties of GM cane, have all been modified to exhibit sucrose levels that are 15% higher than the sucrose levels of ordinary sugarcane in laboratory conditions.

If the field-tests are successful, Brazil — the world’s No. 1 sugar and ethanol exporter — could be well on its way to commercializing transgenic cane by the end of the decade.
