Peru: Sugarcane Takes Another Leap

Cane sugar production in Peru is expected to climb from 910,000 metric tons (MT) last season to 995,000 MT this year, and could be in line for further increases. The US Dept. of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS) reports that Peru could be self-sufficient in sugar as soon as 2009.

This season, sugarcane production is forecast at 8.3 million MT in 2008. Ethanol production from sugarcane explains the increased investment in the industry. Both Peruvian and US companies have bought 10,000 hectares (Ha) each to establish sugarcane plantations to supply the ethanol market.
