Japan: GM Crops For Fuel, Not Food

Currently, 11 GM crops are approved in Japan. The crops – including GM rice (which can yield more grain than standard rice plants for biofuel), soybeans, and corn – are intended mostly for human food and animal feed, although none has been commercially farmed, nor have any inedible GM plants. Under the new team, GM plants that can absorb underground toxic substances and heavy metals will also be considered.

The ministry’s goal is to gain public trust through commercialization of GM crops for fuel, so that eventually GM crops are considered more acceptable for human consumption.
