Sinopec & Novozymes Build Chinese Biofuel Demo Facility

BEIJING, China -– Bioinnovation firm Novozymes, processed agricultural products producer and supplier COFCO, and Sinopec, the world’s third-largest oil refinery, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that covers the next steps towards commercialization of cellulosic biofuel in China, according to a press release from Novozymes.

According to the agreement, COFCO and Sinopec will build a cellulosic ethanol demonstration plant that will produce three million gallons per year of bioethanol made from corn stover. Novozymes will supply enzymes for the new plant — including Cellic CTec2, an enzyme product launched by Novozymes in February that enables the biofuel industry to produce cellulosic ethanol at a price competitive with gasoline and conventional ethanol. The plant is expected to come online in the third quarter of 2011.

The new facility will be the largest demonstration plant in China that converts agricultural waste into biofuel. Chinese agricultural residues alone exceed 700 million metric tons annually.
