Brazil Coffee Steady, Yields Improved
The Agricultural Trade Office (ATO)/Sao Paulo estimates a 4% increase in production compared to 2005/06, up to 46.5 million 60-kg bags, green equivalent. The increase is due to better dehusking yields than was expected in certain areas, notably southern and center-western Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo state.
The area harvested and tree inventor are holding steady compared to last year. The Brazilian coffee yield for 2006/07 is forecast at 20.85 bags/hectare (Ha), a 33% increase over 2005/06 (15.71 bags/Ha.). The main reason for the improvement is the on-year of the biennial Arabica cycle, overall good favorable weather conditions, and improved crop management.
In August 2006, the Brazilian Government, through the National Supply Company (CONAB) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), released the third official Brazilian coffee production forecast for MY 2006/07. As reported by CONAB, coffee production is estimated at 41.57 million bags, a 26% increase over 2005/06 (32.944 million bags).
