Brazil Finds Illegal GM Cotton
Farmers who plant illegal GM crops in Brazil are subject to fines of US $29,500 to $730,000. Monsanto’s Bacillus thuringienses(Bt) Bollgard cotton is the only GM cotton seed approved for planting in the country.
The regional government of Parana state is intensifying inspections in the state, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS). The state Ministers of Agriculture (Valter Bianchini) and Environment (Rasca Rodrigues) signed a joint resolution on the issue, setting out inspection procedures. The inspectors are to check on suspected plantings of illegal GM maize and cotton in Goias. The authorities have imposed a court order against five farms covering 54 Ha in one region of the state.
