Canada: 2008/09 Outlook

The Market Analysis Division of Agriculture Canada has released its outlook for the 2008/09 season for grains, oilseeds, pulses, and specialty crops.

The outlook estimates the production of these crops to increase to 70 million tons in 2008, a 9% increase from 2007. The total supply is forecast to increase moderately due to lower carry-over stocks.

Agriculture Canada analysts also project that canola, malting barley, and durum wheat have the highest potential net returns. The oat area is expected to be pressured by better potential returns for canola and flax seed, while high expected returns should result in more area seeded to dry peas, mustard seed, and lentils. High wheat and soybeans prices are expected to result in increased area as well.
